Backup, done properly
A backup is only worth having if it survives what happened to the original, and if you can actually get your files back. Here is exactly what Backora does, in plain words.
Encrypted before it leaves
Every file is chunked, hashed and encrypted with AES-256-GCM on your own computer. The key never leaves it unwrapped, so a copy of the encrypted data alone is worthless without it.
Verified, not assumed
The server checks every uploaded piece against its content hash and the whole backup's manifest before the app is ever allowed to say Protected. A backup that did not verify is not called complete.
Kept as versions
Each backup is a snapshot in time. Change a file and the next backup keeps a new version without discarding the one before it, for as long as your plan's retention holds it.
What you can protect
Backora protects the files and folders you choose on a Windows or Mac computer: documents, invoices, project folders, a Windows Server's data folders, the files behind a self-hosted website, a database export you place in a watched folder. If it is a file on a computer you control, Backora can back it up.
How a backup actually runs
Scan and chunk
The agent walks your protected folders, splits changed files into content-addressed chunks, and skips anything unchanged since the last backup.
Encrypt and upload
Each chunk is compressed and encrypted locally, then uploaded over a short-lived, single-use link the server issued for it.
Verify and confirm
The server checks every chunk and the manifest that describes the backup, then marks it verified. Only then does the status turn Protected.
Backup for your situation
The mechanics are the same everywhere; what differs is what you are protecting and why. Pick the closest description.
Questions about backup
Does Backora back up open files, like a running database?
It reads files the operating system will let it read while they are in use, but it does not integrate with a database engine to take a consistent snapshot of one still running. For a database, export or dump it to a file first and protect that file — see Database backup.
What happens to old versions?
They are kept for your plan's retention period, and the most recent verified backup of a machine is never removed while your subscription is active, even if it is older than the retention window.
Can I choose which folders are backed up?
Yes. You choose the folders during setup and can add or remove them at any time from the desktop app's settings.
