Website backup

Back up the files behind your website

If you run a website on a computer or server you manage — a self-hosted CMS, a static site's source files, an uploads folder — those files are protected the same way as any other folder.

The files, not the hosting platform

Point Backora at the folder your website's files live in on the machine that runs it, and it is backed up, versioned and verified like everything else.

Restore before you publish a fix

If an update breaks something, restore an earlier verified version of the site's files rather than rebuilding from memory.

Uploads and media included

Images, attachments and other user-uploaded content in the site's folders are backed up along with everything else you protect.

What this page does not claim

  • Backora does not connect to your hosting provider, a control panel or FTP/SFTP to reach a remote server it is not installed on.
  • It does not back up a website's database directly. Export the database to a file on the same computer and protect that file — see Database backup.
  • It is not a website uptime monitor and does not detect that a site is down.

Questions about website backup

My website is hosted elsewhere, not on my own computer. Can Backora still back it up?

Only if Backora's agent is installed on the machine that holds the files — a server you manage. It cannot reach a remote host over FTP or an API on your behalf.

Does it back up my CMS database?

Only the export file, if your CMS or a scheduled job writes one to a folder Backora protects. It does not query the database directly.

Can I restore the site to a different server?

Yes, the same cross-machine restore that works for any computer works here: sign in on the new machine and restore the old one's files onto it.
